Patent process: How to file a patent - practical hands-on knowledge for junior researchers

Patents are a hybrid between a scientific description and a legal document. Successful patents meet both requirements, the scientific and the legal. As a doctoral student or an early-stage researcher, however, one usually has little experience with the legal aspects of a patent. With this tutorial we would like to offer you hands-on experience in order to learn how to file better patent applications. Therefore, we will have a look at the role of patents in innovation and research and the conditions an invention has to meet in order to become a patent.

Main topics of the course are:

  • What is a patent?
  • What makes a good patent /valuable patent?
  • Discussion of the main parts of a patent
  • Prior art
  • Body, claims
  • Where to file a patent and related costs
